Implications Post

The movement for the legalization of medical marijuana is constantly growing and won’t hit its zenith until it is actually legalized. The medical marijuana debate hinges on whether more marijuana medicines for AIDS and cancer patients can be studied and developed. Legislators will be forced to act if more studies on the positive effects of marijuana on AIDS or cancers are published. The first probable step for legalization would be to legalize marijuana for patients who have doctor’s recommendation only. This restriction could eventually be loosened to the point where marijuana is sold in pharmacies to people that are 21 and older in a similar fashion as tobacco and alcohol are.

What are the implications if marijuana is not legalized? What are we facing if it does not happen? Personally, I think that, if it was legalized, there would be a huge lash back and it would take a generation or two to reach normalcy. Do you think that there will ever be a big enough reaction if it does not become legal? Or will the issue just fade away in the future?

I think that if marijuana was legalized that there would be a huge back lash and the country would be divided on the issue. The next twenty years or so will determine how this issue plays out. If the country becomes more liberal and open minded you could see marijuana be leaglized, but if the country becomes more conservative which i think is likely to happen, the issue will probably fade away.

If the restrictions on sale and consumption of marijuana are eventually loosened to the point that the drug is sold in pharmacies, what kind of effect would this have on the recreational consumption of marijuana, especially with the youth and young adult population?

I think that you were right in saying that marijuana would be legalized first medically. However, if it was legalized for non-medical uses, it should be for 21 years and up. But how would they distribute and control the usage of it in your opninion?

The only way you could regulate it is by only allowing 21 yr olds and older to buy it. Of course then you run into the question of underage access to it through fake ids and irresponsible adults. You have to overlook this fact and realize that cases like that happen with both alcohol and cigarrettes on a daily basis and affect a far larger group.
