Pick your Poison, one's Legal and one isn't

Many Americans have vices/ habits that are hard to deviate from. Some choose food, gambling, alcohol, or sex. Some choose marijuana or tobacco. Those that choose the latter will take on health risks but the two main differences between marijuana and tobacco are that: 1) tobacco is legal , 2) tobacco is more harmful. Effects of marijuana on the body are listed as: increased heart rate, slowed neuron processing, respiratory problems, and decreased immune system awareness. When compared to tobacco, the health effects of marijuana seem insignificant. Cigarettes alone have been linked to asthma, heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, and the list goes on. Chewing tobacco causes cancer in the mouth and gums. The cigarette companies have the audacity, though somewhat forced by the government, to put labels saying these products cause cancer and yet the government still allows cigarettes to be sold where marijuana is not legally sold. There is also no proven positive medical use of cigarettes which begs the question “Why are cigarettes legal and marijuana isn’t?”

Cigarettes take millions of lives. Marijuana just gets millions of people high of their asses.

Cigarettes are legal because they have been more popular longer, not necessarily cigarettes but tobacco, you can imagine the founding fathers with their pipes right...tobacco has been a part of the nation since the beginning. I think if the question was raised today it would not be legalized.

I agree that history has compromised health for money and since this has been going on for so long that its hard to stop the runaway train that is tobacco.

This is one of the greatest hypocracies in American History. Alcohol and Cigarettes contribute to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year between lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease, liver failure, drunken driving accidents, and alcohol failure. In order to obtain the lethal dose of marijuana (LD50), on would have to smoke over 20 kilograms of marijuana in less than a day. For obvious reasons, this is impossible. Marijuana carries such a terrible stigma for a number of silly reasons.
1. In the 1930s, lobbying by Dupont and other petrochemical and pulp paper industries undertook a smear campaign against marijuana with the purpose of eliminating the possibility of the possible use of hemp, which had potential to be a major competetor for these industries. Through propaganda films like Reefer Madness, marijuana was portrayed as far more dangerous than it actually was.
2. The classification of marijuana in 1970 in the most strict category of drugs, where it now resides along with heroin, crystal meth and other highly addictive and dangerous drugs despite the fact that marijuana itself has no physically addictive properties.

All in all, it's a shitshow.

Interesting post I must say. I also wonder why cigarettes are legal. Nothing good comes out of cigaretes but marijuana has the ability to help society and the givernment doesn't allow it. You're right, something seems wrong with that picture.

Marijuana was classified a Schedule I drug in 1970 which officially establishes it a dangerous, addictive drug with no medical benefits. Yet, it has been decriminalized in 12 states, and used medicinally in states like Colorado and California. The law needs to be adjusted now that accurate information can prove marijuana is not a Schedule I drug.

Marijuana use can lead to addiction in some people. Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict who is at risk.

I believe legalization of marijuana will easily stop this recession our country is in by creating millions of jobs. Also, marijuana does not have the same intense long term effects of prescription drugs. You can't spell healthcare without THC!
